The President of Tynwald says the Island has ‘lost a great son’ following the death of Doctor Brian Stowell.

The 82-year-old died last week.

In a statement Steve Rodan said: “On behalf of Tynwald I wish to express our great sorrow at the passing of Dr Brian Stowell, and pass condolences to his family.

“Brian Stowell served as Yn Lhaihder (The Reader) on Tynwald Day from 2001-2012, a role which celebrates the Manx language and is central to reaffirming the Manx identity and centuries-old continuity of the formal proceedings on Tynwald Hill.

“As a scholar who made a lasting contribution to Manx culture and the revival of the Manx language, he was awarded the Tynwald Honour in 2010, the highest honour the Island can bestow.

“He was an outstanding Manxman, and the Island has lost a great son.”
