Department seeks to provide clarity on parking of large vehicles and motorhomes

The Department of Infrastructure is seeking to provide clarity in relation to the parking of large vehicles in the Isle of Man.

The legislation that sets out parking restrictions on certain vehicle classes – the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1985 – has been in operation for many years. This legislation remains in place and there are no proposals to change the provisions controlling the overnight and weekend waiting restrictions on heavier vehicles.

Parking restrictions are enforced on roads that are covered by a speed limit. Vehicles with an unladen weight in excess of 3,050kg should not be parked on restricted roads between 6pm and 7am, Monday to Friday, and all day on Saturday and Sunday. A motorhome with an unladen weight of less than 3,050kg is classed as a motorcar, irrespective of the length and height of the vehicle, and may park anywhere that a motorcar can.

Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer MHK said: ‘There has been much discussion recently about the restrictions placed on motorhomes. For clarity, there is no change to the existing legislation. The rules that have been in place for several years still apply.’

He added: ‘The Department is trying to strike the right balance. We need to address the problems caused by some antisocial parking of large vehicles in residential areas. However, the Department recognises the views and needs of motorhome owners. We welcome those who visit the Island in these vehicles and value their economic contribution. I have listened to people’s concerns and the Department will carry out a further review and consultation before any changes to legislation are made.’
