Team Attache appointed for Commonwealth Games squad

by isleofman.com 20th December 2013

The Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association has appointed Alex Holt as the official Team Attache for Glasgow 2014. Alex lives in the host city and is in the final year of studying for a degree in politics at the University of Glasgow. She is therefore ideally placed to carry out any tasks on behalf of the Association which cannot be done by phone, email or post. She said: “There’s already a buzz of anticipation around the city about the Games. Everyone is very enthusiastic about it and I’m looking forward to playing a part in helping Team Isle of Man over the next few months. Before I was asked to become the Team Attache I applied to be a Glasgow 2014 volunteer and it was astounding to see the number of people who applied to help at the Games.”

Alex has decided not to pursue her application to become a volunteer in order to concentrate on her role with Team Isle of Man. Over the next few months she will be visiting Games venues to familiarize herself with the locations for the sports in which the Island is likely to have competitors. As the Games get nearer her duties are likely to increase as Team Isle of Man officials need to collect all manner of accreditations for competitors, team managers, coaches, and support staff. Alex comes from a sporting family and her father Christopher has played squash at masters level for Scotland for the last seven years and is the current over 50s national champion.

The Isle of Man will be one of 71 nations competing in Glasgow between July 23 and August 3, 2014. Potential Team Isle of Man competitors (who have achieved consideration standards) apply for selection in April next year. The team for Glasgow 2014 won’t be announced until May 8, but the Island is likely to be represented in nine of the 17 sports at the Games - athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, lawn bowls, shooting, swimming, and triathlon.

The Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association is the organisation responsible for the publicity, fundraising, travel and support for Team Isle of Man’s participation at the Commonwealth Games. It is a registered charity and relies upon fundraising events and donations to fund Team Isle of Man’s participation and send the strongest possible team to Glasgow 2014. Fundraising initiatives are being planned in the countdown to the Games, but donations to support Team Isle of Man can also be made at www.cga.im
