Annual tradition gets deeply dippy - picture

New Year’s Day dippers are pictured in stormy seas at Laxey.

Several brave souls tackled the traditional run into the waves at noon in the most ferocious weather conditions for years. This was despite the event being officially cancelled by Paul Phillips, landlord of the Shore Hotel, who each year raises money from the dip for the Muscular Dystrophy Society.

There were even pipers on hand to entertain spectators who got a soaking on the seafront.

Meanwhile, the Ramsey dip had to be cancelled because of the gale force weather conditions. At Douglas, around a hundred people ran into the sea to raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer. And despite the conditions, dips went ahead in Peel and Castletown.
