Tynwald Parliamentarians To Attend Westminster PAC Workshop

by Stephen Ritch

In a move towards strengthening expertise in matters of legislative scrutiny two Tynwald parliamentarians are to attend a Westminster Public Accounts Committee workshop.

Mr Graham Cregeen MHK, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts, and Mr Leonard Singer MHK, a member of the Committee, will join the sessions being hosted by the UK Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) between March 11 and 15.

The PAC workshop is one of a series organised by the UK CPA as part of its commitment to expose Members, using Westminster as the parliamentary model, to latest working practices, developments and challenges and, in so doing, enhance effectiveness and refine parliamentarians’ knowledge in order that they may better serve their electorate.

CPA Isle of Man Branch Chairman Mr Juan Watterson MHK said: ‘The Westminster workshop programme epitomises one of the CPA’s prime functions: to provide the means through which parliamentarians may share experience and knowledge with fellow Commonwealth members in order that they may gain a deeper understanding of modern-day processes and contribute to the advancement of parliamentary democracy.  The CPA provides one of the few forums that politicians have for effective training and education in a safe environment.

‘Central to that parliamentary democracy are transparency and accountability. To this end the Westminster PAC workshop will serve to heighten the already accomplished scrutinising skills of Tynwald members in focusing on value for money, effectiveness and efficiency in matters of public expenditure.’
